I’m thrilled to be hosting a special screening of Bint El-Hares (The Guard’s Daughter, 1968) at Cinema Nova in Carlton—a film that holds a deeply personal place in my heart. Growing up, I watched this Lebanese classic countless times, captivated by its music, storytelling, and the unforgettable performance of Fairuz. When I set out to screen it, I had to track down a copy in France, making this screening all the more meaningful.

Cinema Nova, known for its dedication to vintage and foreign films, is the perfect venue to bring Bint El-Hares back to the big screen. This rare gem, written by the legendary Rahbani Brothers and directed by Henry Barakat, is more than just a film—it’s a celebration of female empowerment and resistance. Fairuz plays a resourceful daughter determined to combat crime and challenge gender roles, becoming a masked vigilante to help her father reclaim his job as a night guard. By day, she works as a school teacher, defying the stereotype of men as sole breadwinners and educators.

This screening is not just about nostalgia—it’s about sharing a piece of Arab cinema history with a new audience. Bint El-Hares blends comedy, music, and social commentary in a way that remains relevant today. Fairuz’s dual role as a breadwinner and a vigilante makes for a compelling story that challenges traditional narratives about women’s roles in society.

For non-Arabic speaking audiences, the film will be screened with English subtitles, ensuring that everyone can fully experience and appreciate its story, humor, and music.

Whether you’re a longtime admirer of classic Arab cinema or discovering it for the first time, this is an opportunity to experience a rare and cherished film in a setting that values storytelling from around the world.

Join me for a special evening at Cinema Nova as we celebrate the magic of Bint El-Hares on the big screen. Stay tuned for ticket details—I can’t wait to share this moment with you!
